Google 1997

google97

Someone from Google Fan made a website that imitates Google back in 1997.

If i’m not mistaken, at that time Google was still a project of Sergey Brin and Larry Page at Stanford University. You can tell from the interface, everything was so technical. 🙂

PHP 5.2.1 Release

Ilia Alshanetsky, the project manager of PHP 5.x series, announced the release of PHP 5.2.1 today. You can see more about this release in its official announcement here.

As usual, there are many security enhancements in this newest release of PHP 5.x series. So as Ilia put it,

Given the significant number of security issues that were resolved, my recommendation is that all users of PHP, especially those running really old versions (You know who you are 😉 ) consider upgrading to this release as soon as possible. Not only will the security of your setup increase, but the stability and the performance of your PHP will improve as well.

One of the security issue that has been fixed, which is interesting to me, is to prevent search engines from indexing the PHPINFO() page. I have posted about this issue couple months ago (in bahasa). You can see more about this in Ilia’s blog. It’s a simple fix, but very important for sloppy programmer like me. 🙂

There are also many improvements in term of performance, especially in Windows environment. Which is why i’m so excited with this release, am downloading now, and how fast it goes.

2007 as the Year of the Widget

Honestly, i’m not really comfortable with the term “widget”. Since the term is somehow confusing to me. Some people say it is derived from the combination of “window” and “gadget”. Then there is web widget and desktop widget. Huh?

But whatever the term, people know it, use it and some of them even dedicate their life to develop it. And it grows everyday to such a point that Newsweek is proclaming that 2007 as the Year of the Widget.

And things are getting more interesting. Today, Google Code team announced that Google Gadgets now can be converted to run in Windows Vista Sidebar and Mac OS X Dashboard. Using third party utility application, Mesa Dynamics. You can check out the converter for Windows here, and for Mac OS X here.

Not long ago, Yahoo! also proclaimed that Yahoo! Widget Engine 3.1 runs very well on Windows Vista, which makes Yahoo! Widget as totally cross-OS widgets platform that can run on Mac OS X, Win 2000, Win XP and Windows Vista.

You can easily imagine when two giants, Google and Yahoo!, run on the same field. It will make widget or gadget or whatever more interesting. I must agree with Newsweek if this year will become the Year of the Widget.

Oh, Not Spam Again …

I receive hundreds of spam emails everyday, and i said to myself well that happens to everyone. I receive bunch of spam trackbacks to my blog everyday, and i said well that’s the risk. And now, they also spam my feed reader? oh, please. What is wrong with these guys?

deliciousfeed

Del.icio.us must do something with this. Or, is it Google Reader? maybe both. I’ve had enough with these spam things. So please, make it stop.

MySQL Native Driver

Good news for LAMP (Linux, Apache, Mysql & PHP)programmer, there is a new alternative way to connect PHP and MySQL, mysqlnd (MySQL native driver). It is an alternative driver to libmysql we are currently using.

The good thing about this driver is it’s licensed under PHP license and it’s developed by MySQL developer for PHP group until it reach the stabil version. So hopefully this will improve MySQL+PHP connection.

Current version is still in alpha and it requires PHP 6. But as Uber Nixnutz said, future versions of mysqlnd will also support PHP 5. Once the missing core functionality between PHP 5 and PHP 6 has been implemented.

Jakarta Floods

I got phones and sms from friends asking how am i doing. Well i’m fine thanks. I went out of Jakarta to Lampung two days ago, so i missed all the mess there.

As you probably have known, incessant rain for the last four days has triggered floods in almost every corner of Jakarta, including my office space at South Jakarta.

But i still got a chance to take a picture from thousand feets above the north of Jakarta. Scarry, don’t you think?
